Euhus, MD, FACS
Dr. Euhus’ primary research interests are in the areas of cancer genetics, breast cancer risk assessment and breast cancer prevention. In collaboration with the BayesMendel Group at Johns Hopkins University, he continues to develop his CancerGene program, a software suite for cancer risk assessment and counseling with a special focus on inherited cancer syndromes. His laboratory is actively engaged in identifying markers in breast tissue that could be used to identify women at high risk for breast cancer or that could be used as surrogate endpoints in prevention trials. Most recently his work has focused on DNA methylation, a chemical change in DNA that inappropriately turns off important tumor suppressor genes. These changes are being evaluated in breast cells obtained from high risk women by nipple duct lavage or fine needle aspiration biopsy. Markers of proliferation, programmed cell death and gene expression are also being evaluated as part of a multi-institutional National Cancer Institute-funded chemoprevention trial for which he serves as the principal investigator. His research group is currently exploring mammographic density as a potential marker of breast cancer risk and a potential surrogate endpoint for prevention trials. The ultimate goal of the research program is to discover ways to prevent breast cancer in women who are at high risk for the disease.
more
';
